Journey Through Time with Oaklands’ New History Initiative

Oaklands, renowned for its rich history, is thrilled to unveil an innovative project that brings its storied past into the digital age. Our unique archive is brimming with invaluable documents and photographs that chronicle over a century of academic and agricultural milestones.

Unearthing a Hidden Legacy

Our historic archive is a veritable treasure trove, offering a captivating glimpse into our past. Discovered in the basement of our St Albans site, which partially resides in a mansion built in 1782, these records paint a vivid picture of life from the Georgian era to the present. From student registers dating back to the early 19th century to detailed photographs of agricultural practices, our collection is more than just paper and ink—it is a gateway to understanding how Oaklands has shaped and been shaped by its community over the years.

The primary aim of this project is to digitise these irreplaceable documents and photographs. By converting our historic records into a digital format, we not only preserve them for future generations but also make them accessible to a global audience. This initiative will illuminate Oaklands transformation, from its early beginnings to its current status as a leading educational institution and highlight its significant role in the evolution of agriculture in St Albans and beyond.

A Journey Through Time with Technology

To enhance accessibility, we have incorporated interactive elements into our project. Community members and visitors can now explore Oaklands rich history while walking the ‘Woodland Walk’ footpath. By scanning strategically placed QR codes, you can delve into the stories behind historic photographs, view detailed records, and experience the past in an engaging and interactive manner. These QR codes turn your smartphone into a portal to our digital archive, offering insights and narratives that bring history to life.

This innovative approach not only bridges the gap between past and present but also invites the public to actively participate in our historical journey. Whether you are a local resident, a student, or a history enthusiast, this project offers a unique opportunity to connect with Oaklands’ heritage in a meaningful way.

Engage with Our History

We encourage everyone to get involved and make the most of this immersive experience. Explore our history on the Woodland Walk, contribute stories or artefacts to our expanding archive, and share your discoveries with others. As we move forward, we will continue to enhance our digital archive and develop educational resources that make our history accessible to all.

A special thank you goes to YLM Enterprises for their pivotal role in bringing this project to life. Their exceptional support and expertise have been crucial to its success, and we are deeply grateful for their contribution.

Our history project is more than just a preservation effort; it’s a celebration of our collective past and a step toward a more connected and informed future.
