Oaklands Wolves Basketball Coach Liam Jefferson appointed GB u16's Head Coach

Liam, who joined us this July as Elites Head Coach, has been appointed Head Coach for one of Great Britain’s youth basketball teams - a remarkable milestone in his 15-year coaching journey.

His career began as a volunteer Assistant Coach at Loughborough University while juggling a full-time role in sports organisations such as Youth Sport Trust, UK Anti-Doping, and Loughborough itself. These formative years laid the groundwork for a career defined by dedication and ambition.

Two years ago, Liam seized a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help establish the London Lions Academy. The Lions, home to the UK’s top men’s and women’s teams, are some of Europe’s fastest-rising basketball stars.

In 2023, Liam further distinguished himself as an Assistant Coach for the GB U20 men’s team at the European Championships Division B in North Macedonia. Now, his coaching acumen has earned him the coveted role of Head Coach for a youth GB team.

Reflecting on the achievement, Liam expressed his pride:

“To Head Coach your country at any level, in any sport, is an unbelievable honour. The application and interview process was extremely thorough and featured a lot of high-profile, experienced coaches, so it is humbling to be selected from within such a strong field.”

Liam’s new responsibilities begin in early January, when he’ll start evaluating the player pool and selecting the squad for the International Summer Tournament in August.

This appointment is a testament to Liam’s unwavering commitment to British basketball and his exceptional ability to develop talent on and off the court. All eyes will now be on his leadership as he prepares to guide the next generation of basketball stars to success.
