High Sheriff of Hertfordshire's Garden Party

Oaklands College recently hosted the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire's Garden Party, marking a significant event in the college’s calendar.

Blessed with perfect weather, the event took place just outside the historic Mansion House, with tables set up in front of a marquee. The delightful setting provided an idyllic backdrop for an afternoon of celebration and networking.

The event drew an impressive crowd, with around 300 attendees comprising Oaklands staff, students and distinguished guests. Notable figures in attendance included Annie Brewster JP, The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire; Robert Voss, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire; Charlie Hall, Chief Constable of Hertfordshire; and Jonathan Ash-Edwards, Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner. Additionally, mayors from various Hertfordshire councils, and representatives from charities, businesses and sporting organisations, graced the occasion.

Key speeches highlighted the event, starting with Peter Thompson, Chair of the Oaklands Corporation, followed by Andrew Slade, Principal & CEO of Oaklands College. The Principal shared insights into the college’s rich history, current investment plans and its strong ties to sports. He also spotlighted Jordon Thomas, a former Karate World Champion now leading the Karate Academy at Oaklands. Slade invited guests to visit the ‘Olympic Tree’ on campus, an invitation many attendees eagerly accepted.

Annie Brewster, The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, delivered a compelling speech centred around her annual theme, ‘Sport for Good,’ emphasising the positive impact of sports on communities. Her message resonated deeply with the audience, inspiring many to reflect on the role of sports in fostering social cohesion and personal development.

The Garden Party also served as an excellent platform for networking. One of the High Sheriff’s primary objectives is to connect people from various sectors across the county and this event provided ample opportunities for guests to mingle. Representatives from businesses, charities, local authorities, sports professionals and church members engaged in lively conversations over drinks and canapés, forming valuable connections.

Oaklands College’s contribution to the event’s success was significant. The college hosted the event and its Stables Restaurant catered with exquisite canapés and drinks. A particularly popular attraction was the presence of our Highland cows, charming guests under a shady tree. The college’s hospitality and catering students, dressed in full uniform, demonstrated their skills by serving food and drinks, while a selection of Oaklands Academy students attended to discuss various sports with the guests.
