Entry requirements

A minimum of 6 GCSEs grade 5 or above which must include English & maths and a grade 6 in subjects specifically being studied. You need to have an interest in reading and be willing to approach texts in original ways. Strong essay writing skills are essential.

You will be assessed through a combination of exam and coursework modules. All examinations are marked externally by the exam board. Coursework is assessed initially by your subject teacher and is then moderated by the exam board.

About the course

The focus is on different literary styles of writing: poetry, prose and drama, the specific literary factors that shape the meanings in these texts, as well as contextual, socio-political and cultural factors. The two key genres you will study over the two years of the programme are tragedy and crime.

Career options

Most of our students go on to study at University. English Literature is particularly useful for careers in Journalism, Law, Teaching, Business and also Medicine.

A Levels can lead you onto many different career paths, including university to further develop your skills in your chosen subject(s).
