Entry requirements

If you are retaking your GCSE, you will need a minimum grade of a D to enrol on this course. If it is your first time, you may be asked to complete a short piece of free writing to advise you on your suitability for the course.

Teaching staff

You will be taught by specialist English teachers who are experienced in teaching the GCSE specification and continue to attend training sessions that allow them to keep up to date with current changes and modes of assessment within examination boards.

You will complete coursework in reading and writing and speaking and listening which will enable you to obtain 40% of your overall marks. To complete the coursework we will study a novel by a well known author and a Shakespeare play. You will also be asked to complete a piece of fiction and non fiction writing.

About the course

At Oaklands you will follow a one year part time course three hours a week to complete the GCSE. During the course you will complete coursework in reading and writing and speaking and listening and study a novel and a play. You will also complete a writing assessment as part of the course.

Course Content - What will I learn?

For speaking and listening you will give short presentation take part in a discussion and undertake some role play. The other sixty percent is obtained through an exam which is based around a pre release booklet that is released to students about ten weeks before the exam so we have plenty of time to prepare There are two sections to study media texts and poetry from other cultures and traditions. We will also explore two genres of writing argue persuade and advise and analyse review and comment which you will also be examined in.
