Entry requirements

For entry onto the HNC in Civil Engineering a candidate must be at least 18 years old and fulfil one of the following: A Level 3 qualification in an industry related subject or two A levels in science or technology subjects. In addition you will need GCSE passes in English and Maths (Higher paper). Other requirements are experience that can be identified and authenticated to give good prospects for successful course completion. Normal entry requirements are that applicants should be in appropriate employment or have been in appropriate employment during the last 2 years.

Successful completion of the Extended Diploma in Construction can lead to progression on to the HNC in Construction or other Higher Education courses or alternatively into employment within the construction and property industry.

Course Content - What will I learn?

You will study a range of units covering practical civil engineering skills and underlying theoretical and scientific concepts Year 1: Unit 2 'Construction Technology, Unit 3 'Science & Materials, Unit 4 'Construction Management & Practice, Unit 8 'Mathematics for Construction, Year 2: Unit 1 'Individual Project, Unit 6 'Construction Information, Unit 7 'Surveying, Measuring & Setting out, Unit 20 'Principles of Structural Design
Attendance- one day per week for two years from September to June. Equipment- No special equipment is necessary although a scale rule, scientific calculator and basic stationery will be beneficial. For site visits a pair of safety boots is advised. Hard hats and reflective safety clothing are provided for student use.
