Entry requirements

3 GCSEs at grade E or above or completion of an Entry Level vocational skills course. You should have an interest in working with animals and being outdoors.

Teaching staff

The Animal Care Department boasts an impressive list of professional experts as part of the team. This year, your teachers will include 6 qualified Veterinary nurses, and 6 Animal Scientists specialising in Behaviour, Agriculture and Conservation. Each tutor has areas of special interest such as showing & grooming dogs, farm livestock, exotics and animal health

Assessment

You will undertake a range of assessments. The majority of these are practical, but the course does include some written assessment. Assessment is ongoing and assessment work is undertaken primarily during college time.

About the course

The Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Landbased Studies provides you with a taster of three different sectors; Animal Care, Equine and Agriculture. It is suitable of you want to work with animals but are not 100% certain which vocational area you would like to work in. You should have a keen interest in working with animals and outdoors and some experience of working with animals.

Career options

Progression to further courses depends on individuals results and GCSEs, but could include moving on to a level 2 course such as the Level 2 Extended Diploma in Animal Care, Level 2 Grooming or the Level 2 Veterinary Care Assistant course. Learners who successfully complete the course are also ideally suited to employment in kennels, catteries and pet shops.

Course Content - What will I learn?

Over the course of the year you will develop a range of skills in the landbased sector. You will undertake 10 units of study, four core units: Being Organised; Developing a Personal Progression Plan; Working with Others; Researching a Topic plus six sector specific units in Animal Care, Equine and Agriculture. You will also study English and maths at the level appropriate for you.
Learners are also required to complete a Fuctional Skill qualification in one of the following; literacy, maths or IT in addition to their course.
