Assessment

You will be assessed through one summative observation of your skills in the skills kitchen. You will also have multiple portfolio building sessions and formative observations.

About the course

The course is a combination of skills sessions in our state of the art kitchen; integrated theory into skills sessions and work experience in our restaurant kitchen. The course is made up of one unit where students must create a two course meal in a controlled professional working environment. They must also carry out cooking at home as part of their directed study programme.

Career options

You will have gained suitable skills to work at a basic level in many kitchens locally and nationally. There is option of a Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Food Preparation and Cooking for those who wish to progress their studies into the subject.

Successful completion of our Hospitality & Catering courses can lead you onto a higher level course, university or even into employment.

Course Content - What will I learn?

This qualification is mainly practical based looking at street food styles and bakery products. Students are tasked with researching recipes and sharing knowledge with other people, understanding and growing confidence to cook meals in the workplace and/or at home. Getting a better understanding of how to economise when planning a meal and the ability to transfer skills learned to different recipes whilst inspiring others and sharing knowledge.
As part of your course you must complete either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, depending on your current grades. You will gain a Level 2 Food Hygiene qualification which is a requirement of working in the industry.
