Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 9 - 3 including a grade 4 in either maths or English and a Level 1 qualification.

Teaching staff

The course is taught by qualified and experienced staff who have extensive experience in the world of sport. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. Teaching methods will include: formal teaching, discussions, role play, practical and group work.

Assessment

Students study up to 12 units in total including, three core units and four mandatory units. Each unit is assessed practically through a range of methods including presentations, role plays, practical performance, written reports, posters and verbal questioning. There are two externally assessed units and these will take the form of exams throughout the year.

About the course

The Cambridge Level 2 Technical Diploma in Sport has been developed in the sport and active leisure sector to: Provide education and training for sport, leisure and recreation employees. Give opportunities for sport, leisure and recreation employees to achieve a nationally recognised Level 2 vocationally specific qualification. Give full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector or to progress to vocational qualifications such as a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports or L3 Personal Training. Give learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

Career options

Successful students can progress onto a level 3 course such as BTEC Level 3 90 Credit/Extended Diploma in Development, Coaching and Fitness and Sport and Exercise Science. You could also apply to go onto the CYQ Level 2 Diploma in Exercise and Fitness Instruction. This course can also lead to employment in the sport and leisure industry with an apprenticeship or advanced apprenticeship in sport and recreation.

Our Sports courses will help you get to the ceiling of your ability and this could be Regional, National or even International level competition. You could also progress to University or into direct employment.

Course Content - What will I learn?

Throughout your study programme you will study the following aspects: BTEC First Diploma in Sport which covers core units such as Fitness for Sport, Carrying out a Sports Related Project and Practical Sport Performance. You will also study mandatory units such as Anatomy and Physiology for Sport, The Mind and Sports Performance and Training for Personal Fitness. We also study a range of other units across the course. You will be required to sit two exams throughout the course in Anatomy and Physiology and Fitness for Sport and Exercise. English and Maths 'depending on grades you will either retake your GCSE'S or functional skills. Work experience 'you are required to complete a total of 20 hours of work experience throughout the year and this can be completed here at the college. Work experience cannot be paid work and must be relevant to the course you are studying. PDR 'you will have weekly PDR sessions with your course tutor which will entail personal 1:2:1 sessions and lessons tailored around health, social, economic and welfare issues.
All students will be required to undertake English and Maths qualifications at either GCSE level or at a relative Functional Skill Level. If part of an Academy you will be have training sessions and extra lessons around your Level 2 Sport and GCSE/Functional Skills.
