Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification although it is required that you have a minimum of Maths Level 2 and English Level 2. You do not need prior knowledge of Accounting Software packages or Level 1 Bookkeeping. You can test your knowledge at https://www.aat.org.uk/qualifications-and-courses/skillcheck

Teaching staff

Oakland College will deliver this course in partnership with Mindful Education. Mindful Education will provide pre-recorded videos for lessons followed by a weekly face-to-face session at the St Albans campus. Face-to-face sessions are run by fully qualified staff members.

Assessment

When you're studying for an AAT qualification your knowledge and skills will be tested via computer-based assessments (CBAs). These are administered by AAT Approved training providers or assessment centres and run entirely on PCs or laptops. Most units are wholly computer marked so results will be available automatically, for the human-marked elements you will receive the results after six weeks. Oaklands College is an approved training provider.

About the course

This flexible course is delivered in partnership with Mindful Education, and combines online learning with face-to-face lessons in the classroom. This Level 2 course is part-funded, so the cost for students is reduced. This qualification delivers a solid foundation in finance administration and core accounting skills, including double-entry bookkeeping, basic costing and an understanding of purchase, sales and general ledgers. Study the Level 2 certificate to gain a solid foundation in the basics of accounting. On successful completion of this course, you might be eligible for a fully funded Level 3 course. Please see information on progression below. Please note: The course starts on 23.09.2024. Classroom attendance is weekly.

Career options

On successful completion of this course, you can progress to higher levels of the AAT Accounting Qualifications (Level 3 and then on to Level 4) depending on your overall relevant skills, results and satisfactory attendance. Under the Free Courses for Jobs initiative, you might be eligible for a fully funded Level 3 course. Alternatively, you can apply for an advanced learner loan to cover the cost of your Level 3 study. Course Content - What will I learn?

Students will also learn about accountancy related business and personal skills and be introduced to the four key themes embedded in the qualification: ethics, technology, communications and sustainability. The learners will benefit by achieving the following learning outcomes: Understand how to set up bookkeeping systems. Process customer transactions. Process supplier transactions. Process receipts and payments. Process transactions into the ledger accounts. Use control accounts. Reconcile a bank statement with the cash book. Use the journal. Produce trial balances. Understand the cost recording system within an organisation. Use cost recording techniques. Provide information on actual and budgeted cost and income. Use tools and techniques to support cost calculations. Understand the principles of contract law. Understand the external business environment. Understand the key principles of corporate social responsibility (CSR), ethics and sustainability. Understand the impact of setting up different types of business entity. Understand the finance function within an organisation. Produce work in appropriate formats and communicate effectively. Understand the importance of information to business operations.
