Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 9 - 3 including a grade 4 in either maths or English and a Level 1 qualification.

Teaching staff

You will be taught by teachers with a range of experience in both site carpentry and bench joinery. All tutors are qualified carpenters from industry and have a varried range of skills in relation to carpentry & joinery. The tutors are supported by technicians with relevant qualifications and industrial experince. Your NVQ qulification will be supported by an assessor who again comes from industry with the relevant qualifications and experiences.

Assessment

Your technical certificate will be assessed by unit tests and a gola test at the end of the programme. There will also be a synoptic phase test for the practical component of the technical certificate. During the programme you will be formatively assessed on work produced, practical/theory, and there for the assessment process is ongoing at all times.

About the course

This is a part time course covering one year. The level 2 Diploma site carpentry is available at the St Albans campus. This course is designed to give learners their first experiences and insight into site carpentry. The aim of the course is to put in place all the basic skills and knowledge that is required to become a good site carpenter. It consists of three core units: Know how to carry out safe working practices, Knowledge of information, quantities and communicating with others and Knowledge of building methods and construction technology. In addition you will study five trade units: First fixing operations, Second fixing, Erect structural carcassing, Carry out maintenance, set up & operate circular saw. All theory is practically assessed and supported with assignments. On completion of the practical work there is a 18 hour synoptic test to be passed.

Career options

On full completion of the level 2 course you will be guided and advised onto a construction management course.

Many carpenters and joiners are self-employed. You could also find work with large construction companies, local authorities, shopfitting firms, or in set-building for theatre and television.

Course Content - What will I learn?

You will learn about the tools you use as a site carpenter (hand/power) and how to utilise them. The materials, the techniques, health & safety, the construction industry in general & employment rights (employee & employer).To gain the level 2 diploma candidates must be successful in achieving all units and passing the synoptic practical test. You must also pass the online Gola test, a separate knowledge test set and assessed by CAA (Constructions award Alliance) the awarding body.

It is a necessary for learners to achieve a minimum of 85% attendance in order to pass with awarding body points scheme in place to ensure progress.
