Entry requirements

This course is appropriate for people working in the Golf Greenkeeping or Sportsturf industry. You should be fully employed at a Golf Club or Sports Turf venue. Due to government funding rules the cost of the course will depend on your age, qualifications held etc. You are advised to contact the Workbased department at the College for advice on cost.

Teaching staff

Your assessors will be staff who have extensive backgrounds in the spots turf industry as well as in teaching and assessing workbased qualifications.

Assessment

Success in the programme will be based on practical competence in the workplace and underpinning knowledge. Students must complete a portfolio of evidence to support their competence.

About the course

The course is delivered in your workplace using a mix of learning that involves use of the College online learning platform (Oaklearn) and Assessor guidance. There is not normally a need for learners to attend College other than for an interview and initial assessment. The duration of the course will in most cases be 14 months and you can start at any point in the year.

Career options

This award will give you a level 2 qualification. On completion of this course and assuming suitable experience and skills you can progress onto the City and Guilds Level 3 Workbased Diploma in Sportsturf Management.

Course Content - What will I learn?

The topics covered in the diploma include turf maintenance, health and safety in the workplace, self-development, maintenance of turf surfaces (e.g. top dressing, aeration etc.) machinery use and maintenance, maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems, preparing of ground and establishment of grass areas etc.
There is no additionality for this course, however pesticide application certificates PA1 and 2 or 6, a 1st aid qualification would both be useful additions to help pass the course (note these are not included as part of the level 2 course).
