Entry requirements

GCSE English, maths and Science at Grade 4 or above plus one other at Grade 4 or a Level 2 technical qualification at least a merit overall (and have passed maths and English) It is strongly recommended that applicants gain some voluntary experience within the animal sector to ensure that they are fully prepared for the expectations of the study programme and gain a realistic insight into the animal industry. A minimum of five days (which do not have to be consecutive) is advised.

Teaching staff

The course teaching team have worked in a range of environments within the animal industry e.g. veterinary surgeries, animal welfare charities, wildlife parks and farms. They hold a variety of qualifications, including Degrees in Wildlife Conservation, Animal Science, Animal Behaviour and Veterinary Nursing, and are all qualified lecturers

The course will be assessed by a variety of methods including individual and group presentations, case studies, assignments, practical assessments, projects, externally marked exams and synoptic assessments.

About the course

The L3 Advanced Technical Diploma is studied over one year with progression onto the Extended Diploma in the second year. It is aimed at those wishing to work within the varied animal management industry or for progression to university on a related subject. There is a compulsory work placement unit of 150 hours to be completed in the first year. This course give a good technical training and education providing a vocational alternative to A Levels and the opportunity for successful students to progress to Higher Education or employment.

Career options

On successful completion of the Extended Diploma students may be able to progress to a Foundation Degree or Honours Degree course in a related study area e.g. Animal Management, Animal Science, Zoology, Behaviour or Welfare. For those going into employment, the aim of the course is to produce competent carers of animals in establishments such as animal collections, pet shops, rescue centres, animal charities and zoos with the potential to take up management positions after further experience.

Course Content - What will I learn?

This qualification enables you to gain the core skills and knowledge required for working with and caring for animals. Good practical skills are really important when looking after animals. You will learn how to work safely around animals, be responsible for the planning and carrying out animal husbandry health and handling, and feeding and nutrition. You will also learn about animal behaviour, animal breeds and welfare During the course you will undertake animal unit duties at the College's well-stocked animal facility, where you will become familiar with caring for the wide variety of animals that are housed here
