Four GCSEs at Grade 4 / C or above including English and Maths or a Level 2 qualification. You willl also require a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS).

Teaching staff

The Health and Social Care Team are made up of Lecturers with both academic and vocational backgrounds in Health and Social care and related disciplines. The expertise within the team include: Nursing, Care, Management, Social Policy, Early Years, Counselling and Psychology.

The course is assessed in both years by coursework and the completion of successful placements.

About the course

Duration: The duration is one year with the option to extend to 2 years to achieve the Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. You will learn by completing assignments that are based on a range of theories which will be linked to work placement experience. When you have finished the course you can choose to go into work straight away or continue with the 2nd year to accrue enough UCAS points to apply for university.

Career options

BTEC Nationals are valued by employers and higher education (Universities and Colleges). Students go into careers such as Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Speech Therapy, Residential Care Management, and the following a higher education degree/diploma course. Alternatively you can work directly, in registered care homes, hospitals or in the community as a care worker or health care assistant.

Course Content - What will I learn?

The course is made up of units of study with subjects including: Developing Effective Communication, Infection Prevention and Control, Equality, Diversity and Rights, Safeguarding, Human Growth and Development, Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, Personal and Professional Development, Sociological and Psychological Perspectives for Health & Social Care. There will also be a range of specialist units to study. The Level 3 Certificate includes 200 hours of work placement and 300 hours of work placement hours if you continue onto the L3 Extended Diploma in Year 2.
