Entry requirements

This course is appropriate for people who have some experience in working as a teaching assistant, classroom assistant, learning support assistant or special needs assistant in schools. You must be over 16 years of age and currently working in a school.

Teaching staff

Qualified and experienced childcare assessors will run knowledge and portfolio building workshops at St Albans Campus on some Wednesday evenings in term time.

Your skills will be directly observed in the workplace by a qualified childcare assessor .All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods which could include: written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams or setting up an information board.

About the course

This qualification provides learners with an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school and college environments. It covers all aspects of specialist support including planning; delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher; bilingual support; special needs support; and personal development and reflective practice.

Career options

This award will give you a qualification suitable for a position as a teaching assistant, classroom assistant, special needs or learning support assistant. You could progress on to a Foundation degree.

Course Content - What will I learn?

You will learn about all aspects of supporting teaching and learning in schools in line with current developments in the sector and have the opportunity to reflect on your practice. The qualification comprises of 16 units. Sample units include: Understand How to Safeguard Children and Young People; Support English and Maths Skills; Support the Use of ICT in the Learning Environment; Understand How Children and Young People Develop; Support Children and Young People's Speech, Language and Communication.

All learners at Oaklands college take part in initial assessment in Maths and English. This helps us to ensure that everyone reaches their full potential. There will be the opportunity to upgrade your literacy and numeracy skills by undertaking recognised basic skills qualifications.
