About the course

This is a broad-base engineering course which covers many areas within the large Engineering sector. It is suitable for students who wish to progress to Higher Education or for those who wish to enter directly into employment. It combines substantial theoretical learning alongside an opportunity to develop practical work-related skills. You will undertake the L3 National Foundation Diploma in the first year with the option to progress onto the L3 Extended Diploma in the second year.

Career options

On successful completion of the L3 Foundatin Diploma you would usually continue onto a second year to complete the L3 Extended Diploma or on to an apprenticeship. On completion of the two year Extended Diploma you could progress onto a Higher National Certificate, a degree course or into employment.

There are so many different areas of engineering to work in; however, most engineers choose to specialise in just one, such as chemical, automotive or robotics.  Careers in engineering are constantly evolving and new processes and technologies are being developed all the time.  This allows engineers to stay on the ball and react to new problems and challenges in their chosen career.

Engineering careers are constantly varied in terms of their job responsibilities, but also in their working locations.  As an engineer you could be working in an office, in a laboratory, on an oil rig, in a factory or on a race track.

Each engineering discipline requires professionals with very specific skill-sets.  However each and every area of this sector is as complex as the next.  Consequently, all engineers need to have strong mathematical skills, logic and the ability to rise to intellectual and practical challenges.

Course Content - What will I learn?

There are four mandatory units: Engineering Principles, Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team, Engineering Product Design and Manufacture, Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering. You will also study: Microcontroller systems, Computer-aided design, Pneumatic and hydraulic systems. In the second year on the Extended Diploma you will gain a wider view of the sector, which includes elements of mechanical, electrical and manufacturing engineering. This includes units such as: Mechanical principles and applications, Further engineering mathematics, Engineering design and drawing, Properties and applications of engineering materials, Engineering maintenance and cinditiin minitoring techniques.
For some, university progression to Redbrick or Russell group Universities require A Level mathematics as well as an Extended Diploma. For those with an appropriate GCSE grade profile, A Level mathematics will be offered alongside the Extended Diploma.

Please contact us to find out if you require any specific equipment for this particular course.

You will be mostly assessed by completion of assignments rather than by exams.
