About Us

The Cycling Academy sets a new standard with its innovative freeride and endurance programmes. In its second year, our freeride academy produced a junior national BMX champion and an elite national series winner in pump track events. Simultaneously, our endurance academy boasts a distinguished track record of nurturing national champions and advancing riders to the Great Britain Cycling Team.

The academy is dedicated to helping talented and aspiring riders progress from youth to senior levels, fostering both their physiological development and racing acumen. Their goal is to cultivate the best riders while ensuring they retain their passion for the sport.

Programme Highlights

The Oaklands Wolves Cycling Academy offers a comprehensive programme designed to develop talented riders both on and off the bike. Athletes benefit from integrated training and study, with half-day sessions, long rides, physiotherapy, and "Cycling Theory" classes that cover tactical and technical lessons, guest speakers, and race video analysis.

Riders also have the opportunity to pursue the Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE) in partnership with British Cycling, adding an additional qualification to their training.

  • Strong connections with European and UK domestic teams provide a pathway to professional cycling
  • East of England Cycling Academy Pathway (EECAP) offers progressive training and a degree course for riders aged 18+
  • British Cycling: Collaborates on the Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE) and supports our development programmes.
  • Redbridge Cycling Centre: Provides facilities and training resources for our endurance academy.

Important Information

The Oaklands Wolves Cycling Academy brings together talented cyclists aged 16 to 18, developing their skills, fitness, and potential to become elite senior riders. It’s the only programme of its kind in the UK, attracting top junior cyclists and offering exposure to various cycling disciplines with opportunities to specialise.

The Endurance Academy combines full-time cycling training with further education, giving riders the chance to pursue a cycling career while gaining essential life skills and academic qualifications.

The academy helps riders develop their talents through a strong competitive programme, focusing on leadership, tactical, and physical skills. Riders can race at a European level, with some progressing to the UCI Continental team.

The academy also offers access to top training tracks, including Alcotroz and 72 acres of trails in St Albans.

The Freeride Academy, established in September 2020, accommodates over 20 riders who train full-time to pursue their passion for freeride mountain biking. In partnership with Superfoxx and Canyon, the academy offers a rider-focused programme based at the London Colney site. Riders have access to a range of tracks, north shore lines, and skills areas, honing their abilities and building confidence.

Oaklands College coaching covers fitness, race skills, and technical proficiency, with a focus on developing high-level riders for fun or competition. The academy’s race team competes in British circuits, with several riders advancing to World Cup level. The programme supports individual ambitions, with access to excellent tracks and local forest trails to aid rider progression.

The weekly schedule for both sides of the academy follows the same structure:

Training takes place in the mornings, with academic study in the afternoons. Wednesdays are dedicated to full-day training, additional sessions, trips, and cycling-related activities such as talks, webinars, and masterclasses with professional riders.

Gym sessions are spread throughout the week, tailored to the needs of Freeriders, BMXers, and endurance riders. Track sprinters and specialists also receive dedicated attention from our strength and conditioning lead coach.

The only formal requirement of joining the cycling academy is to be enrolled on one of our full time courses.

Alumni

The success of Oaklands Wolves Cycling Academy is evident in our alumni's achievements at international levels. Former student Joe Blackmore shares, “The academy provided me with the tools to grow as a rider while also teaching essential life skills.”

This focus on athletic and personal development prepares our riders for future success both on and off the bike.

In 2024, Parris-Smith secured her first national title by winning the Individual Time Trial at the British Cycling National Track Championships.
